Updates to Japan’s COVID entry requirements

Announced a day or two before its implementation on April 29th, Japan has decided to lift its COVID-entry requirements. The Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary indicated this new date will ease the transition process as many travel abroad during Japan’s Golden Week.

What This Means

Visitors no longer require a vaccination card or a negative test result. Japan has implemented this across the board, with China no longer excluded. Generally, Japan has returned to pre-COVID measures.

Ongoing Entry Inspections

While you no longer need a vaccination card or test result to enter Japan, Japan will still monitor incoming visitors. If you exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, you will be tested. Those with positive results must quarantine at a designated facility per the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. You will have to pay for this quarantine. You can find statistics of those quarantining here.

COVID Visa Exemption

For those wondering, the suspension of visa exemption has ended. Citizens who did not require visas to enter Japan prior to COVID, such as the USA and others, no longer require a visa to visit. Japan has alos dropped temporary measures requiring tourists to travel with a government-recognized tourist agency.

Things to Know Before Entry

Many things have changed since the onset of COVID that may surprise return visitors and newbies alike:

  • Japan has implemented new rules regarding Oversized Luggage on the Shinkansen and requires reservation;
  • The JR group is increasing The Japan Rail (JR) Pass cost by around 70% starting October 2023;
  • Japan has enacted a fast-track entry system for customs, immigration called Visit Japan Web (VJW);
  • The JR Pass has changed from a booklet to a ticket that works in the automated gates;
  • You can purchase the JR Pass in person (trial until Spring 2024) or on the official website now;
  • You do not have to wear a mask but they are recommended on public transportation systems that have more people than seats;
  • Certain businesses can require masks, though this is unlikely.
